British Broadens Methanol Poisoning Alert List with An additional 11 Countries

Toxic substance alert sign

British authorities has placed eleven further destinations to its official advisory list concerning the dangers of methanol toxicity from tainted alcoholic drinks.

This expanded warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "an international surge in the number of reported cases" of industrial alcohol contamination.

Only recently, authorities had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, in response to several high-profile incidents including the deadly death of six tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being warned that as little as tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can result in vision loss or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.

What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Used?

Toxic alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol often used in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint thinner. This substance is not intended for ingestion.

While it is generated during the production of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the refining procedure.

Yet in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to save money, and since it is tasteless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to identify.

Official Guidance for Travelers

Authorities minister Hamish Falconer said that every traveler should recognize the signs of methanol toxicity.

"While drinking spirits abroad, choose well-known venues and refrain from unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," Falconer warned.

"If something seems unusual, such as a headache that's far more intense than normal or blurred eyesight – get medical help fast."

The entire list of destinations noted as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
